A registry office wedding in Jersey

Reviewed 11 September 2026 · By Jack King

The simplest legal wedding in Jersey happens in a registrar’s ceremony room, with two witnesses and no venue hire at all. Here is how the process actually works.

Where registry ceremonies happen

Civil marriages in Jersey are conducted by registrars of the Superintendent Registrar’s office. The simplest option is a ceremony in the registrar’s own ceremony accommodation in St Helier; the same legal process applies at any approved location on the island, from a castle to a manor room. The official list of approved wedding venues is published by the Government of Jersey.

The process, in order

What it costs

The registrar’s fees are set by the States of Jersey and change periodically — the current figures are published on the government’s marriage pages, and the registrar’s office will confirm the total when you give notice. Budget separately for the ceremony location: a registrar-room ceremony carries no venue hire, while approved venues charge their own fees — from around £850 for a heritage fort ceremony to £2,950 at Mont Orgueil.

Registry office, then celebrate

A pattern many couples use: the legal ceremony at the registrar’s accommodation one day (or the same morning), then a celebration lunch or dinner elsewhere on the island. It keeps the legal side simple and spends the budget where guests actually feel it. Common questions

Can we get married at the registry office in Jersey?

Yes. Registrars conduct ceremonies in the ceremony accommodation of the Superintendent Registrar in St Helier, or at any approved location on the island. It is the simplest and least expensive legal route.

How much does a registry office wedding cost in Jersey?

Registrar fees are set by the States and change periodically; current figures are on the government marriage pages. The registrar-room ceremony itself carries no venue hire — approved venues charge their own separate fees.

Do we have to arrive early for a registry office wedding?

The same rule applies as everywhere: notice at least eight weeks ahead, and a joint appointment to collect the marriage schedule 3 to 10 days before the ceremony. Plan to be on the island several days before the day itself.
